How often have I already heard and read his story; how often have I already thought about it: Abraham, one of the truly great role models of our faith. He was the man with the promise that a people would come from him like the grains of sand by the sea, impossible to count. A great promise … and yet … for so long, so terribly long, nothing of it could be seen. Everything stayed just as it had always been.

He is the hero of faith who, against all human thinking and feeling, believed that God would keep the promise he had given. Of course, Abraham was not the only one who went forward in faith. We read the two words "by faith" 21 times in the eleventh chapter of Hebrews. There we find a list of astonishing things that ordinary people achieved with God through faith.

It's about faith that gives strength to endure, that trusts in God, that brings down walls, that gives strength in weakness, through which we become strong in battle, that drives out fear, turns back hostile armies, and keeps us from shrinking back. It is the faith that reaches out for what God has promised.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and the sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God
