About the Shofar
The instrument is a picture of the planned sacrifice of Isaac as a burnt offering on a mountain in the land of Moriah. Abraham, the bearer of the divine promise, was to offer his own son, for whom he had waited so many years and on whom the divine promises rested, as a sacrifice to God. He was to give up what was dearest to him, the "son of promise". And Abraham was obedient. At the climax of the dramatic event, just as the "father of faith" was about to kill his son with his own hands as a sacrifice to God, God Himself intervened. The proof of Abraham's devotion and obedience was already sufficient for God; Abraham did not need to carry out the deed. In Isaac's place, Abraham was allowed to sacrifice a ram sent by God that had become caught in the thicket. The ram's horn therefore speaks of the substitutionary sacrifice, of the sacrificial animal that dies in place of the human being.
The sound of the horn is a peculiar and utterly unique sound. It is not a sound of this world; it is a heavenly sound, a sound of victory, a sign that the divine claim of justice has been satisfied. It is the sound of God's holiness, of the blood, of the sacrifice, of the battle, of deliverance, of the seizing of authority. Shofar horns – shofarot – are ancient biblical instruments, but they are not to be understood or used like a musical instrument, rather like a "spiritual weapon". Through the sound of the shofar, a proclamation is made into the spiritual dimension.
The term "battering ram" (a ram being the male sheep) refers to an ancient weapon that was used to attack the walls or gates of enemy fortresses. Blowing the shofar accomplishes exactly the same in the spiritual realm. It serves to destroy enemy strongholds and to bring about breakthroughs in the spiritual dimension. Every blast of the horn is a blow against the spiritual walls and gates of enemy fortresses.
For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for the destruction of strongholds; thus we tear down arrogant edifices of thought and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God.
