Anointing is a term that appears frequently in the Bible. What exactly is it, and what significance does it have for us today?

When we say that we are “Christians,” it actually means that we are “the anointed ones,” because the Hebrew word Messiah, which is translated as “Christ,” means “the anointed one.”

Prophets, kings, and priests who were appointed were anointed. And even in the Old Testament, anointing was often directly associated with the Spirit of God:

The Spirit of the Lord, O LORD, is upon me, for the LORD has anointed me anointed.
Isaiah 61:1
