One of the most astonishing things in God's creation is the miracle of photosynthesis. Sunlight as electromagnetic energy, water and CO2 from the atmosphere form organic substances and ultimately solid matter. Carbon dioxide is rightly regarded as an indispensable building material of life. Our human body is carbon-based as well, because carbon is the basic framework of almost all biologically important molecules, for example proteins, fats, carbohydrates and DNA.

The earth's atmosphere consists of only 0.043 percent CO2. Nevertheless a real war against CO2 is being waged politically and in the media. Of the world's fossil carbon dioxide emissions, 1.54 percent come from Germany, about 580 million tonnes. That seems to be an enormous figure. But how much is it really? What can one picture by it?
