Almost 2,200 years ago, a whole series of dramatic events took place in Israel that led to a blazing uprising against the ruling Greek Seleucid Empire. The ruler had himself called "the visible god," the Most Holy Place was defiled with pig's blood, and the Greek god Zeus was to be worshiped in the temple. Under the leadership of the Jewish Maccabean partisan troops, the revolt broke out – against an enormous military superior force.

Martin talks about why the Maccabean revolt is still important for us today too. For we, just like they did then, are in danger of bowing down before the altar of the spirit of the age, of watering down our faith, and of for the applause and acceptance of the world.
