Martin talks about the unusual accompanying phenomena and manifestations that have occurred time and again during seasons of revival or outpourings of the Spirit. And even though these workings of the Holy Spirit are a real source of tension for many : God does not conform to our rules of conduct, conventions, or what is considered acceptable in our society.

Phenomena such as trembling, falling down, ecstatic states, laughing, screaming, visions, and so on are not an isolated case, but appear throughout the epochs of history across various traditions, cultures, and theological backgrounds. For example, among the Huguenots, the Herrnhuters, or the Methodists; in the time of Charles Finney or Maria Woodworth-Etter; in Wales and Los Angeles (Azusa Street) all the way to the Toronto Blessing and the Brownsville Revival in the 1990s.

One thing is clear: not the outward phenomenon, but the fruit in the lives of those affected was and is what matters.
