There were, and still are: bringers of salvation who call themselves messiah, savior, redeemer, or God outright, who let themselves be honored, revered, and worshiped by their followers. Today it is estimated that there are several dozen people worldwide who actively claim to be the messiah.

Martin has engaged with false messiahs and takes you along on a tour through the centuries and their self-proclaimed redeemers.

The focus in this first part is false messiahs within Judaism. For Jewish history knows quite a number of men who considered themselves the messiah — or were considered so by others. Some of them claimed to be able to free the people of Israel from oppression and exile; others saw themselves as spiritual renewers. Usually connected with political crises or times of oppression and persecution, they made use of the deep Jewish hope for the promised messianic redeemer.
