Part 1: Germany Is Different

Today in Germany, vibrant Christianity is a marginal phenomenon in society. Compared to spiritual life in much of the world, the church of Jesus in Central Europe is strikingly lacking in social relevance and effectiveness.

The congregations are small and often lead a shadowy existence in a society that is completely opposed to God, a society that does not expect Christianity to provide answers or solutions to the questions of modern life. True Christians are a rare sight in a society that is far more characterized by dead religiosity, esotericism, or atheism.

Why is that the case in Germany?

If you look back through the decades on the timeline, you'll see that there really was a starting point for this situation.

Germany is a mission field

It is said that a country, when 10% of the population are born-again Christians, it is considered to have been reached by the Gospel. This means it is no longer a mission field.

In Germany, it is estimated that only 1 to at most 2 percent of the population are born-again Christians (approximately 1.5 million people)—that is, people who have made a conscious, personal commitment to Jesus in their lives. Germany is definitely not a Christian country, but rather a mission field.

It has Christian roots, but society leads a deeply pagan life. Compared to the spiritual life in much of the world, the church of Jesus in Central Europe is strikingly lacking in social relevance and effectiveness in every area.
