He faced an enormous challenge that affected the entire people of God. He bore full responsibility. Everyone relied on him and his decisions. His calling was to lead the entire people of God into the land promised by Yahweh, a land protected by enemy fortresses, strongholds, demonic altars to idols and well-armed enemies It was just teeming with them. Joshua!

Joshua and his story is a very encouraging example for each of us. He certainly doesn't seem to have been the cool, laid-back, confident type. In any case, God's decisive and most important requirement of him was: "Be strong and courageous!" Joshua had to hear this over and over again—until he truly took it to heart.

Didn't I command you: 'Be strong and courageous'? Don't be alarmed, and don't be afraid! For YHWH, your God, is with you wherever you go.
