There are wilderness seasons in life. They describe times of disorientation, loneliness, barrenness, lack, crisis and perhaps even inner emptiness.

Sigrid talks with you about how well the Bible knows the theme of the wilderness and how many passages describe it. What struck her about these descriptions: God is never far away. He does not leave His children alone in the midst of limitation, loss, weariness and the absence of any prospect of renewal. For Wilderness situations are not meant for settling down and staying. They announce a new beginning that is already unfolding. The Word of God promises us that in the midst of the wilderness seasons God opens up for us springs of hope, provision and blessing.

The Old Testament uses several different Hebrew terms that are usually all translated with the single word “wilderness”. We will look at some of them and discover their prophetic and spiritual meaning.

Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
