1999 — 20 years ago: Berlin becomes the seat of government again following the relocation of the parliament and the government

1989—30 years ago: The fall of the Berlin Wall, the reunification of Germany (after 40 years of division into two German states), beginning in Berlin

1979—40 years ago: The Iranian Revolution; a massive rise in aggressive Islam.

1969—50 years ago: The 1968 Unrest, the Student Revolt

1959—60 years ago: The Pergamon Altar, which had been removed by the Soviets after the war and returned under Khrushchev in 1958, was reopened in East Berlin. The same building now also houses the Ishtar Gate, which is considered a symbol of Israel’s Babylonian captivity.

1949—70 years ago: The two German states were founded. The Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) on May 8; the Basic Law was adopted on May 23. The German Democratic Republic (GDR) was founded in October, with Berlin as its capital.

1939—80 years ago: The start of World War II, originating in Berlin.

1929—90 years ago: The Great Depression. Germany in the chaos of the Weimar Republic.

1919—100 years ago: Following the end of World War I, the Weimar Republic was founded, with Berlin as its capital.

1909—110 years ago: Construction begins on the new Pergamon Museum in Berlin. And in what is considered the darkest chapter in the history of Christianity in Germany, the so-called Berlin Declaration is drafted. The work of the Holy Spirit in the burgeoning Pentecostal movement is denounced as the work of satan (the “spirit from below”). This leads to a schism within German Christianity.

1899—120 years ago: Excavations began in Babylon by order of the emperor (Ishtar Gate; the first pieces arrived in Berlin in 1913; shortly thereafter, World War I began, originating in Berlin).

1889 — 130 years ago: Birth of Adolf Hitler

1879—140 years ago: The transport of the Pergamon Altar from Turkey to Berlin began. The first pieces had already arrived in Berlin in 1871. That same year, the German Empire was founded, with Berlin as its capital.
